Traditional Irish Soda Bread

โ€“ 4 cups all-purpose flour
โ€“ 4 tablespoons white sugar
โ€“ 1 teaspoon baking soda
โ€“ 1 tablespoon baking powder
โ€“ 1/2 teaspoon salt
โ€“ 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
โ€“ 1 cup buttermilk
โ€“ 1 egg
โ€“ 3/4 cup raisins

1. Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
3. In a small bowl, beat the buttermilk and egg together. Add this to the flour mixture, stirring just until moistened. Fold in the raisins.
4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Form the dough into a round shape and place on the prepared baking sheet. Cut an โ€˜Xโ€™ into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
5. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Let the bread cool on a wire rack.
